Mumbai Braces for More Heavy Rain as IMD Issues Orange Alert, Water Levels Rise in Seven Key Lakes

Mumbai experienced intense monsoon rainfall as the IMD issued an Orange Alert predicting heavy to very heavy showers and thunderstorms across Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar. Rising water levels in the city's seven key reservoirs have provided relief for water supply concerns, while authorities remain alert for flooding, tree falls, waterlogging, and severe traffic disruption.

Mumbai witnessed intense monsoon showers early Wednesday morning, triggering widespread disruption across the city and its suburbs as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that weather conditions are likely to worsen during the day. Heavy rainfall slowed traffic, reduced visibility, and affected the morning commute, while authorities remained on alert for possible flooding and other rain-related incidents.

The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Wednesday, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations across Mumbai and Thane, accompanied by thunderstorms. Palghar is also expected to receive heavy rainfall at several places, raising concerns over continued disruption across the region.

Private weather forecasting agency AccuWeather has also predicted persistent heavy rainfall throughout the day and night. According to its forecast, the maximum daytime temperature is expected to remain around 28 degrees Celsius, while the nighttime temperature is likely to be approximately 26 degrees Celsius. The probability of precipitation has been placed at 100 percent, indicating a high likelihood of continuous rainfall.

Amid the intense rainfall across Mumbai and surrounding areas, water storage in the city's seven critical lakes has started showing a significant improvement. According to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday, the combined water stock in the seven reservoirs increased to 7.18 percent from 6.75 percent recorded a day earlier, providing much-needed relief amid concerns over the city's water supply.

The seven reservoirs supplying water to Mumbai include Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Tansa, Tulsi, Modak Sagar, and Vihar. These lakes are located across Mumbai, Nashik, Palghar, and Thane. Water levels in these reservoirs had continued to decline throughout June because of the delayed arrival of the monsoon and inadequate rainfall.

Visuals from multiple parts of Mumbai showed slow-moving traffic and severely reduced visibility, adding to the difficulties faced by commuters during peak morning hours. The continuous downpour also increased the risk of waterlogging across several low-lying areas.

The IMD has advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and to stay away from weak structures, trees, and waterlogged locations as a precautionary measure.

With heavy rainfall expected to continue, civic authorities remain on high alert for possible flooding, tree falls, and major traffic congestion. As the monsoon intensifies, Mumbai is preparing for another challenging day marked by severe weather conditions and widespread disruption, while the gradual rise in reservoir levels offers a measure of relief for the city's long-term water security.
